Throughout our lives, we have meetings, and we have encounters. Our visit to Nexus Pets, while a scheduled meeting, was an encounter we will never forget.
When Bubbles & Squeak first came into existence, our primary focus was to be the best dog treat business possible. But after engaging with pet owners of all kinds, we soon realized that the idea of Bubbles & Squeak was bigger than providing treats for dogs alone. We broadened our focus and began offering flavors that were suitable for cats as well as sharing our Carrot and Apple treat with hamsters, guinea pigs, and horses. Thus, we rebranded and became Bubbles & Squeak Pet Treats.
While at an event in Yukon, OK last year, we met Amanda with Nexus Pets. When she told us of her work with the horses and about the equine rescue, we happily shared our Carrot & Apple treats with her to take back to the ranch to give some of the horses as an extra special treat. Because of that encounter at that event, we were able to connect and begin a partnership with an organization that does impactful work for animals and humans alike.
Nexus Equine was founded in 2016 with the mission of equine welfare in Oklahoma. In 2023, they expanded their services to include not only horses but dogs and cats as well. Nexus Pets bridges the gap between people and resources for pets across Oklahoma. Their primary goal is to connect communities with pets, reducing the number of at-risk animals through education, outreach, and adoption initiatives. (Information provided from Nexus Animals)
One of the standout programs that Nexus is a part of is The Genesis Project, which is a qualified residential treatment program providing trauma-informed care to abused and neglected boys for the state of Oklahoma. The Genesis Program partners with Nexus to bring equine therapy and teaching life skills and lessons to the boys, including being caring, nurturing, and recognizing the needs of others. By working with the horses at Nexus Equine, they learn to connect appropriately with other living things and teaches what a healthy attachment and emotion for other living things looks like. Another exceptional partnership Nexus Equine has is with the Oklahoma 4-H program and its Equine Makeover, created in 2019 as a 90-day challenge. Paired with a Nexus horse for a 90-day period, the duo participates in a final presentation to a panel of judges, showcasing their progress and development as they are taught leadership skills, developing responsibility, and increasing horsemanship skills. At the end of the event, the participants can adopt their horse, but if not, the horses return to Nexus to be adopted from there. A $1500 scholarship is awarded to the winner, along with a variety of prizes given to everyone who participates. (Information from Nexus Animals)
One of the ways Bubbles & Squeak will partner with Nexus is by supplying treats for adoption bags as they work to find homes for the dogs, cats, and guinea pigs in their care.
